Repair Orange Peel Texture WallsA Cheap Alternative to Stomp or Knockdown after Drywall Repairs
Orange peel texture, also known as eggshell or splatter texture, is sprayed on using a hopper and compressor in new construction. Matching when repairing drywall is easy.
This texture pattern is very popular with general contractors and subdivision developers because it is economical and many homes can be done by painting subcontractors quickly in a production fashion. Other patterns such as stomp or knockdown texture take extra steps and labor but have a more custom look. The first step is to repair drywall holes, seams, or corner bead. Once the patch is in and the wall is taped and floated, it's time to match the existing texture. There are several ways to do this. The method chosen is based on personal choice and the extent of the repair. Paint Roller Texture Repair MethodFor this method, the following tools and materials are required:
Paint roller texture is very versatile in its appearance. Thin out the drywall compound a bit with water so that it's easy to work with. This can be done right in the paint pan. Now, use a scrap piece of drywall to practice on. Roll some compound out in all directions. To match the existing texture, play around with the rolling speed and pressure. Keep in mind that the roller will leave ridges on the “beads” or raised areas. This is alright; the important thing is to get the diameter of the beads right. After the compound has dried, lightly sand the surface to round out the raised area to match. Finally, prime and paint the wall. Spray Can Texture MethodThis method involves using commercially available spray cans of orange peel texture. Again, practice on some scrap drywall. These cans can be expensive so it's cost-prohibitive for large areas and the coverage noted on the can should be taken as an estimate. It helps to use masking or wide painter's tape to isolate the repair area. Once the area is sprayed and dried, it sometimes helps to use fine sandpaper to blend in the new with the old. Texture Hopper and Compressor MethodThis method works well for very large repairs and room additions. The hopper and air compressor can be rented from tool rental companies and home improvement stores like Home Depot or Lowes. As an alternative, Homax manufactures and sells a manual pump sprayer. The texture itself can be bought in powder form and mixed prior to application. Thinned out drywall compound may also be used. It's a good idea to use sheet plastic to protect the floor. Also, hang it in open doorways.
